A Fellow animal empath…

And I thought I was the only one with an over exaggerated empathy with animal pain. I seriously doubt my sanity at times, because I get so distressed at an animal in pain. If I see carrion on road, I feel deeply sad. I’m vegan so I attempt to live to the core without hurting or exploiting animals. It is so nice to come across another animal empath. I am glad you shared the story of your fish and I wish more people would be so caring. Thank you.

Did you know that goldfish can live for over 10 years in a decent tank?

When I was 16 and working at Walmart, they had this employee appreciation sale and I had no idea what to buy, so I bought an aquarium. I think I had dreams of having pretty exotic fish since I bought a heater and everything.

I went to the pet store and asked for 2 fish. The woman said something along the lines of “No, you’ll want more. About 80% of them will die within a week, so I’ll give you 10.” They were literally like $.25c each, so I went along with it, but it was pretty morbid to think that the majority of them would die.

But die they did. I was a kid. I had no clue that pH balance was a thing. I’d wake up with a new fish…

  1. I had fish a few years back, most of mine lived to a good age. Angel fish lived 9 years. Had two tanks, one cold water and one tropical. I get so sad when I see people posting pics on social media of their new fish in a small tank with no filter. I have to try to educate them kindly explaining they will have to get filters, water testing kits and so much that goes into the science of keeping fish alive and healthy. I know people who cleaned their tanks out by emptying all the water and scrubbing out the tank completely, washing any filter sponges with tap water. Killing all the good bacteria.
Fish are wonderful, and every one of them has a character. I rescued one which was discarded in a garden centre in a bucket. Was a goldfish with no tail. He was lovely, born without a tail. I called him WAG, cos he wagged his body when he swam. Look at me waffling on. Cya lol
